What makes a good presentation?
- Every design decision you make has to be driven by rationale - expect questions and be ready to talk about your reasons in anticipation, talk about what you tried and why it didn't work - create realistic 3D mock-ups - listen carefully - the presentation isn't about you - use your audience's language * relate your work to different perspectives - yay metaphors - believe in your work, be enthusiastic, humor is good 1. what the site is about, its purpose 2. inspiration 3. how the design portrays that 4. system elements |

(current) Environmental and Plant Biology Research Site ---> BIOTA
- what does the names say? what indications does it give? not a lot - what info should be included in the subtext? location, purpose, garden, connection to OU, audience - purpose? - teaching - research - practice of alternative agriculture methods - gain experience - outreach projects - audience (who does the garden want to attract?) - students - local community and kids (for educational programs) - people from the bike path - OU Garden club (already uses the space) - HOW? could they help in promotional activities/programs? BRAINSTORMING - educational gardens - common learning gardens - garden-based learning - sustainable education gardens - common learning grounds - grounds for (research and) education - OU's educational backyard * a common green Ohio University's common learning grounds Ohio University's sustainable learning gardens A common ground for sustainable gardening at Ohio University |

- make drinking water available
can they drink that water? - connection between people that travel on the bike path and the garden as a place to relax, get clean water, orient themselves through maps of the town/the bike path - paved driveway for cars and bikers - HOW TO DO LEAD PEOPLE FROM THE BIKE PATH TO THE WATER? FROM THE UNIVERSITY? - student service groups paving potholes on the driveway - bringing students and community members to fix a problem that are then exposed to the garden *sometimes by solving problems, you are creating an audience - possible hurdle - university requirements for design and signage - garden art (Olivia) kids get to paint woodcuts of the leaves (Paula) big rock sits outside the garden and anyone can paint it - the line between design and programming does not have to be a barrier - doing one thing that has several different outcomes at one time |
promotion
targeting an audience |
How to successfully designate areas and mark them with a color?
- map explaining colors - colored stones, colored flowers - colored bamboo markers - painted benches - flagging - plants now are often designated by stakes with a tag - What is important to be indicated in the garden? - some people might not take the times to figure out the system and what area is designated for what, people may feel hesitant and not explore at all if not encouraged - more obvious forms of signage * maybe the color system is more conceptual and cannot be successfully applied to actual way-finding in the garden Presentation Review/Reflection - triad of sustainability - a model, now incorporated into education courses the system is in crisis right now - it is out of balance Presentation Review/Reflection - triad of sustainability - a model, now incorporated into education courses the system is in crisis right now - it is out of balance - What happens when the leaves are spun? (Dancing leaves) How does each leaf function on their own? - strong concept - the fact that one tree supports three different kinds of leaves |

sustainability triad is not new - applicable to garden and things you see there
- 3 elements and the conversation between them * has to function in black and white and possibly as small as a postage stamp - typefaces that have aligning and non-aligning numbers/figures |
Sustainability - economic, environmental, social
- issues stemming from personal and community "needs" - community does not stay within own system - creative solutions - awareness - thinking about where things come from and the process supporting that product shortening the pathway of a product - As an individual, you are born into an existing system. But a system that has malleability over time - education of public leads to systems change |
