Process as of late |
11.20.13
- not fully understanding - only seeing a sliver of the end goal/not able to conceptualize the intended outcome - frustration -deadlines that don't make sense - sometimes the creative process doesn't unfold with the acknowledgement of deadline. the last part comes into place first and the first part that is assigned cannot be completed until something else comes to fruition -not feeling free to expression and play in the work - more controlled and directed - it has to fit into this system or that -creatively stuck -not passionate about the work before me -feels like I am pushing someone else's idea to fruition and not my own - like a ghost writer - this is not my true work and someone else will receive that credit, but it must be good and it must be published in the style and point of view of the true author -ghost writer/creator - jumping into someone else's project halfway through, trying to understand their goals, and helping to reach that goal |
Connecting theories to garden presentation |
10.30.13
Theories/Concepts from Chapter 7 that relate to our garden presentation - concept map connected sassafras leaves and colors to the triad of sustainability - complexity and experience - how design effects peoples' broader experience creating a relationship between the colors and the location/function of the area - a way of visual orientation (service design) design that promotes interaction and encourages people to interact and influence their environment (activity theory) - designed for a persona: students, kids, local community - ethnography - comes from first hand experience at the garden -what people do at the garden, what their experience is |
Place vs. Site |
10.21.13
How is a place different from a site? A place - it is more encompassing, doesn't have a set function, but a broader use of the space - not limited - come to my place - not to do anything specific - it is a place of changing function - a place in your heart or mind - a place has more connection to emotions - a "space" where things can be fostered (relationships, emotions, etc.) whereas a site is not adapted to foster those things A site is not interactive, it is stagnant. A site is a place where something happened or will happen in which people want to know or learn about and go see - it is often a relic of the past - a site can also be a place dedicated to a specific goal - you come here to do this/for this purpose - the efforts are localized - something will happen here |
Systems |
10.2.13
elements that make up the system of your community elements that enable the process of life that unfold essential, elemental - people (and the elements they bring) friendliness welcoming willing change in relationship between 2 people due to context connections to other worlds of interest and people - design elements? transportation signs - street signs directional sign - labeling places - classes structure time in class as well as time spent outside of class to do work class schedules can greatly vary time taken to walk to class redundancy = consistency allows us to make distinctions by comparison - brand strategies take advantage of redundancy, patterns System is structured mostly around classes - the appointed time of the class Class times usually start later and run much later than the time for an office job would or the time that a grade school runs. System of taking the time to walk to class - not a complex system of busing or personal driving on a daily basis because of the small size of the town. The transportation system is best suited in town for walking, biking (kind of) and possibly motorcycles. Parking is very limited for cars, so other forms of transportation are by effect encouraged. System of connections and relationships. My relationship with my professor is one of student-teacher in the classroom, but when riding horses with his wife at their home, it is a more 'level playing field' in the sense that I am not his subordinate. In the horse world, me in relation to my professor, he does not hold the same sort of authority - because of my familiarity with the horse world. I have several relationships like this one, where the dynamic between me and another person changes due to context. Bosses become friends, elders become friends with a common interst |
Working In Teams |

negatives... -outsider influence on the group -non-specific communication -perceived social inequality and imbalance -unfair/imbalanced distribution of work positives... -knowing details and guidelines -emotional investment -ambition/motivation -trust- follow through, communication, honesty (sometimes critical) |
"Signals of Now" |
9.16.13
A lot of my discussions lately have revolved around ideas of activism, entrepreneurship, community groups implementing change, etc. - a hope that change is totally possibly and people are wanting to work to make it happen. Also, a realization of connection- things aren't random- IT'S ALL CONNECTED. Focus by some on the humble path of self-discovery and awareness. Perhaps this points to a need to focus on the individual and the importance of seemingly small actions in a huge global community/complex society. There are so many paths to choose, but somehow following your passion will allow other things to fall into place- for example, $ to support oneself, a necessary evil. "Signals of Now" - the business industry/corporations are realizing the importance of creativity- the creative and free spirit. Less restrictions to a way of thinking - something which was so deeply engrained - hard to understand if there is anything that's NOT taught or learned - anything innately true? |
Early Memory of Visual Medium |
8.28.13
Postcards from Venice with Carnivale characters on them - watercolor and ink on clean, white backgrounds. The Carnivale costumes were incredibly intricate - the hanging beads, the sequins, the colors, lots of fabric. I was a joker with my face painted. Mom and Dad were not in costumes but they both had their faces painted - lots of swirls, continuous condensed design. I also remember the fun and playful Japanese characters. There were schoolchildren cartoons on the side of our bright, yellow school bus. There were little characters on the rice wrappers, lunch boxes, chopsticks, etc. Cute and immature in the sense that there was little detail or attempt at realism. The characters were kept in the world of play and imagination. Blocks of color and shapes, very contained, unlike the Carnivale characters on the postcards. |
